Objects on screen

Pictures, emoji, drawings, and text, and the settings every object has: size, turn, mirror, transparency, and which one is in front.

Try each example, then copy the words under it and paste them to your AI. You can also send your AI the link to an example.

Kinds of object

Everything on a Minimo screen is one of four kinds.

Four kinds

Pictures made for the game are the normal choice. The other three kinds have their own jobs.

Ask your AI

Draw the player as a picture made for this game, in the same style as the rest of the art.

View code
game.add(new ImageSprite(game, "star", x, y));

Why not emoji?

Emoji are quick, but they are not really yours.

Every phone draws emoji with its own font, so the same game looks different on an iPhone, an Android phone, and a Windows computer, and a symbol a device lacks shows as an empty box. Pictures made for your game look the same everywhere and give it its own style. Emoji are fine for trying an idea quickly.

Ask your AI

Make every object in the game a picture in one art style, not an emoji.

Settings every object has

Change how an object looks without changing its picture.

Size, turn, and transparency

Any object can grow or shrink, turn, and become see-through.

0.8×
0°
100%
Ask your AI

Show the star at 0.8 times its size, turned 0 degrees, and 100% visible.

View code
star.scale = 0.8;
star.rotation = 0;
star.alpha = 100 / 100;

Swap the picture

An object can change its picture while the game runs: to animate a character frame by frame, or to show it powered up.

300ms
Ask your AI

Animate the character by switching between its two pictures every 300 milliseconds.

View code
let frame = 0;
game.addTimer(300, true, () => {
  frame = 1 - frame;
  hero.setTexture(frame ? "star" : "coin");
});

Mirror

Flip a picture so a character faces the way it walks, with no second picture needed.

Ask your AI

When the character walks left, mirror its picture left to right.

View code
crystal.flipX = true;

In front or behind

When objects overlap, the one on the higher layer is drawn on top.

Ask your AI

Always draw the heart in front of the gem.

View code
heart.layer = 2;
gem.layer = 1;
